Three-year research grant to investigate the second language acquisition of sign language

Three-year research grant to investigate the second language acquisition of sign language Marshall (University College London), Janke (University of Kent) and Gullberg have been awarded funding by the Leverhulme Trust (UK) to investigate the acquisition of a sign language as a second language. Although much is known about how adults learn a second spoken language, and although most sign language users are second language users, we know very little about the second language acquisition of sign languages. This project will explore experimentally how hearing adults break into a language that seems starkly different from their first without instruction. The project seeks to understand whether all human language learning works in the same way, regardless of the nature of the language to be learned.
